the simple measures

i found two hairs
entwined in my mattress
neither of them were mine
so i wondered
while i inspected them
were they from
some past interaction
i couldn't recall
one was blond
and the other
blood red
was there a time
when even the bed spread
had been pushed off
onto the floor
i pondered over it
in the bright lamp light
and realized
there was time to sleep on it
