Doubly So

a brand new sport coat
with three shirts
that go with it perfectly
no ties can compromise
its utility
or its conversational
inspiration
tho
a bird with words
can sit in a cage
and be content
to break its wings
and crane its neck
while it exclaims
"What a day it is!"

now a pipe in the palm
and a jingle to the pocket
can speak without talking
and a word for history
is no longer history

we may win a race
we may join a tribe
we may save a face
we may learn to taste
we may complain
or be perfectly content
at making our rent
on the start of the month
